Venuzo Dawhuo Lifts 15th Naga Wrestling Open Championship; Khrielhounuo Thevo Wins Historic Women’s Title

Venuzo Dawhuo, a 28-year-old wrestling sensation, emerged victorious in the 15th Naga Wrestling Open Championship by defeating Kezhaseluo-o Pienyu in the final match. The championship, organised by the Nagaland Wrestling Association, took place at the Local Ground in Kohima.

Hailing from Thenyizu village in Phek District, Dawhuo is a well-known name in Naga wrestling. He has won the Chokri Area Wrestling Association (CAWA) championship title five times consecutively and has claimed several other prestigious titles in the sport.

The first-ever Women’s Open Naga Wrestling Championship 2025 also made history in the event. Khrielhounuo Thevo from Seiyhama Village clinched the title in the 60 kg and above category by defeating Lütholü Vezhü from Upper Khomi village. In the below 60 kg category, Vizoseno Kiso from Sakhabama village secured the championship title by defeating Kulungolü Nakhro of Thenyizu village.

In the men’s below 75 kg category, Muleciyi Vadeo from Runguzu village won the final match against Seyiejalie Gwirie from Mezoma village. Meanwhile, in the below 90 kg category, Sasüyi Nyiekha from Suthozo Nawe village emerged as the champion after defeating Kevizhakho Soukhrie from Jotsoma village.

The championship witnessed an enthusiastic turnout, celebrating the rich tradition of Naga wrestling while making a significant milestone in promoting women’s participation in the sport.
