Manipur Police arrested a Facebook page administrator, Seram Suraj Meetei, for allegedly spreading fake news with communal content that could disturb public peace and harmony. The arrest took place in Porompat under Porompat Police Station in Imphal East District.

Seram Suraj Meetei, a resident of Wangoo Terakhong Awang Leikai under Kumbi Police Station in Bishnupur District, was currently staying at Pong Lambi, Lane No. 3, near JNIMS Hospital in Imphal East.

In March, Manipur Police had already intensified its crackdown on fake news by registering six FIRs against various WhatsApp groups and channels accused of spreading misinformation in Churachandpur district.

In a post on X, Manipur Police stated, “Manipur Police has registered six different FIRs against WhatsApp groups and channels for spreading fake and inflammatory news, creating and promoting fear, panic, and public alarm in Churachandpur district. We warn that legal action will be taken against other channels spreading false or inflammatory content.”

The district has recently witnessed multiple shutdowns and violent incidents, prompting authorities to take strict measures against the spread of misinformation.
