Union Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, highlighted the Northeast as the new engine driving India’s growth, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of making the region a hub for IT and electronics.
The minister flagged off three new trains from the Guwahati railway station and virtually inaugurated the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) and a 10 KW FM transmitter at Akashvani Kokrajhar.
The three new trains include the Guwahati-New Lakhimpur Janshatabdi Express, the New Bongaigaon-Guwahati Passenger Train, and the Tinsukia-Naharlagun Express. The event was attended by Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and cabinet ministers.
Speaking on the occasion, Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted the importance of coordination between industry and academia to boost employability. He said that NIELIT aims to provide a platform for skill development in the region.
“The railway track to Bhutan will be initiated soon. Since the Modi government came to power, many transformative railway projects in the Northeast have been completed and delivered to the people. Substantial budgets have also been allocated for Assam and other northeastern states under the railway sector,” Vaishnaw stated.
He further elaborated on PM Modi’s initiatives, including the shift from the Look East Policy to the Act East Policy, which has led to numerous developmental projects in the region. Vaishnaw highlighted that funding for northeastern states has significantly increased compared to previous governments.
“The Northeast is on the path to becoming India’s next IT hub. It was PM Modi’s vision to establish the NIELIT university, and today, we see that vision materialising. Chips made in Assam will soon be used in vehicles manufactured in Germany and the US,” he added.
