No Entry for Passenger Vehicles to Meghalaya from Jorabat Continues

Four days after the Mukroh incident, entry of cars, 2-wheelers, particularly with Assam numbers into Meghalaya still restricted
Restrictions on movement of passenger vehicles to Meghalaya from Jorabat in Assam continues for the fourth day today.
Even as heavy vehicles such as trucks and other similar vehicles carrying food and essentials have been allowed to move on the route, restrictions are still on, particularly for Assam-registered smaller vehicles such as cars and two-wheelers as a security measure.
The restrictions have been in place since November 22, the day when the firing incident took place in Mukroh village in West Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya.
Five Meghalaya residents were killed in Assam Police firing in which Assam forest guards were also involved.
Assam Police had opened fire to disperse a huge crowd that had gathered after the Assam forest guards had stopped a timber-laden truck in Mukroh on that fateful morning. The incident took place in the early hours of November 22.
Since then two incidents of arson has been reported from Shillong, the capital city of Meghalaya. On November 22, a vehicle with Assam registration was set ablaze in Shillong and in another incident yesterday evening, a traffic booth was set on fire and a city bus was attacked near the busy Civil Hospital junction in the heart of Shillong.
Miscreants hurled petrol bombs during a peaceful sit-in demonstration and candlelight vigil yesterday evening in Shillong.
Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma met Union Home Minister Amit Shah yesterday in New Delhi and requested him to order a probe into the Mukroh firing by a central agency – NIA or CBI.
Assam government has already handed over the probe to CBI and has also set up a judicial probe into the unfortunate incident that had also killed an Assam forest guard.
