No deaths in Assam in 2023 due to extremist activities: CM Sarma

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today said that the state has not reported any deaths this year due to extremist activities and added that the state is living in an era of peace and prosperity due to persistent efforts of the Union and State governments.

CM Sarma said that under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the state has achieved several milestones in security scenario.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that earlier the controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) was enforced in 8 districts of Assam. Recently the Act has been lifted from Jorhat, Golaghat, Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao districts and is currently effective in the 4 districts of Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Sivasagar, and Charaideo.

A total of 8,756 Assam militants who have surrendered have been rehabilitated in the past 2 years and are leading a dignified life. Approximately Rs 300 crore has been invested in rehabilitation programs, said CM Sarma.

The rehabilitated surrendered militants include — 4,203 members of the National Democratic Front of Booland (NDFB), 1,926 Karbi, 1182 Adivasi, 301 National Liberation Front of Bengalis (NLFB), 98 Adivasi Dragon Fighters (ADF), 63 National Santhal Liberation Army (NSLA), 28 Rabha National Liberation Front (RNLF), 29 UPRF, 124 ULFA-I (Sporadic Surrender), 127 United Gorkha Peoples Organisation (UGPO), 74 Tiwa Liberation Army (TLA), 38 Kuki National Liberation Army (KNLA), 11 DNLA (Sporadic Surrender), 181 Dimasa National Liberation Army (DNLA) (MoS), 164 National Liberation Front of Bodoland (NLFB), and 184 other militants.

In an effort to help the misguided youths get back on track, the government has also taken all necessary measures for imparting skill development of entrepreneurship to make them employment worthy so that these persons are rehabilitated and lead a normal life with dignity.
