NIT Silchar boarders allegedly assault mess employees again, second case in 7 months

Yet another incident of assault on mess workers of a hostel at the National Institute Of Technology (NIT, Silchar in Cachar district of Assam has been reported.

Within seven months after the last assault case, wherein, a group of students brutally thrashed three cooks of a hostel on suspicion of mobile theft, now a group of students allegedly under the influence of alcohol assaulted workers of another hostel of the institute yesterday night.

According to sources, the incident occurred at Boys Hostel-7 at around 7.30 pm yesterday.

According to eyewitnesses, the students first verbally abused the mess workers and then physically assaulted them. Additionally, they caused damage to the hostel’s mess area by throwing dishes and cookware on the floor.

The reason behind their violence is not known yet.

No case has been filed in the matter yet, however, the institute authorities have formed a committee to look into the matter, said sources.

Earlier, in July last year, a group of students brutally thrashed three cooks on suspicion of mobile theft. The incident occurred at Hostel No. 9 of the Institute.

Video of the incident that went viral showed the cooks was repeatedly beaten with sticks, kicked, and punched, while two security personnel present at the scene stood idle, not intervening to protect the victims.

The administration had rusticated four students from the institute for a year, and a fine of Rs 10,000 each was imposed against 12 students.
