Nagaland’s first medical college NIMSR to start classes today

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio will formally inaugurate the medical institute on September 6, 2023

The Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences & Research (NIMSR) Kohima, state’s first medical college will begin its first academic session 2023-24 with the first batch of MBBS classes today.

The first batch’s classes will start with a foundation course and induction activities like hostel assignment, campus orientation, and student-faculty interaction session.

This induction programme will be attended by chief secretary, J Alam, Principal Director of Health and Family Welfare Dr. Ritu Thurr,Director cum Dean, Prof. Dr. Soumya Chakraborty, students and faculty of the medical institute.

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio will formally inaugurate the medical institute on September 6, 2023.

Earlier, the National Medical Commission had asked NIMSR to allot 100 seats for this academic session.

The NIMSR was successful in filling 85 seats with applicants from the state and 15 seats with applicants from the All India Quota.

55 of the 85 candidates from the state who got admission for the first batch are female and 30 are male.

The medical college was built at an estimated amount of Rs 189 crore. The project was approved by the central government in 2014.

From 2026 to 2027, NIMSR is expected to have a full-fledged 550-bed hospital on college grounds.

Earlier, CM Neiphiu Rio acknowledged the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for the support in enabling to set up a 400 bedded teaching hospital in Kohima and enhancing the healthcare system.
