The Manipur University Students’ Union or MUSU has withdrawn its earlier decision to shut down the Manipur University from December 15 onwards to demand for appointment of a Vice-Chancellor.
The decision came after the University appointed Professor Amar Yumnam as the VC in-Charge on Monday as per a notification after receiving approval for the same from the Ministry of Education and in accordance with University rules.
Meanwhile, Prof Amar Yumnam, who is the senior-most professor of the varsity, was formally appointed the new Vice-Chancellor in-charge of Manipur University today with immediate effect.
It may be mentioned that MUSU has been demanding for the appointment of a new VC as the post has been lying vacant since February when the then vice-chancellor AP Pandey was removed from his post by an order from the President of India.
Since then, retired IAS Jarnail Singh took charge of administration however he too was relieved from his post on November 30 by an order from the Manipur High Court.
Furthermore, the MUSU had earlier also staged sit-in demonstrations in this regard inside the university campus on the 3rd and 5th of December.
