Mizoram Assembly Clears Mizoram State University Bill, 2025

This bill aligns with the recommendations of the NEP 2020, which mandates the phasing out of all affiliated colleges by 2035.

The Mizoram State University Bill, 2025, introduced by State Education Minister Dr. Vanlalthlana was passed by the Mizoram Legislative Assembly today.

This bill aligns with the recommendations of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which mandates the phasing out of all affiliated colleges by 2035.

Under the NEP, Mizoram University is set to become a research-intensive institution, thereby creating a need for a new degree-granting university in the state, despite the ongoing financial challenges.

The newly established Mizoram State University will initially function as a cluster of colleges, with plans for its headquarters in Aizawl. This cluster system requires at least five colleges to be in close proximity to each other with the broader vision of expanding the university to other districts in the future.

In an effort to utilise the state’s existing resources, all colleges currently under the state government will automatically become constituent colleges of the new state university. The move aims to enhance the quality of education and prioritise employability with the goal of generating a skilled workforce to meet the state’s needs.

The Chief Minister of Mizoram will serve as the Chancellor of the University which is in line with the recommendations of the MM Punchhi Commission.
