The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been given custody of 4 of the 7 arrested accused in the horrific Manipur viral video case today.

The 4 accused–Huirem Herodash Meitei (32), Arun Khundongbam (29), Yumlembam Jiban Singh (18), and Ningombam Tomba Singh were produced before the Special Judge Thoubal today following which their custody was handed over to the CBI.

The other three accused may be produced before Special Judge Thoubal within 2-3 days.

The court directed that the 4 accused persons be taken over from the state police today itself so as to enable the CBI to investigate the case smoothly.

The four accused were remanded to CBI till August 2, 2023.

The Special Judge also directed the Investigation Officer of CBI to produce the four accused before him on August 2, 2023, at around 11.30 am.

It may be mentioned here that two women were paraded naked by a mob in trouble-torn Manipur on May 4, 2023. The incident came to light after a video clip of the heinous act went viral on social media.

Earlier, on July 27, the Centre asked the Supreme Court to hand over the case to CBI and requested it to direct the trial to be conducted outside Manipur and underlined that the trial should be conducted in a time-bound manner.

Centre stated that regarding the incident of sexual assault and violence on two women, the Union Home Ministry has been continuously monitoring developments of the case after it came to light.
