Manipur Violence Day 3: Army Stages Flag March, People Defy Curfew as Students Burn Effigies of Governor and CM

Even as Army, Manipur Police and Paramilitary Forces are out on the streets of capital city Imphal and an indefinite curfew is in place, students of Manipur University defied the curfew as they burnt effigies of Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh and Governor L P Acharya.

Last night, Jiribam saw a lot of violence as angry mob attacked the offices of political parties, BJP and Congress, and burnt office furniture and other items and even set fire to the mobile tower in Kalinagar area of Jiribam protesting the ban on internet services.

One protestor was killed, and another was injured after police opened fire to control the violent protestors.

Speaking to the media, a local resident said, “They were going to the SP’s office to address their grievances, but the SP wasn’t there. The Officer-in-Charge (OC) asked them to submit their demands in writing. The protestors then gathered near the Irabot statue to discuss their demands. While they were doing so, a special commando officer allegedly confronted them, leading to a heated verbal exchange. The officer left, but tension escalated as the protestors headed toward the police station.”

The resident further alleged, “When they didn’t find the officer at the police station, they were told he was at the guest house. As the crowd moved toward the guest house, the officer reportedly started firing at them. One person was shot in the neck and died on the spot, while another was injured with a bullet wound to the back.”

Indefinite curfews continues in seven districts of Manipur, including Imphal East and West, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching, Churachandpur, and Kangpokpi. Internet services have been suspended across these areas to curb the spread of misinformation and control the situation.

Angry mobs attacked the residences of several MLAs and CM N Biren Singh. Among the first to bear the brunt of the peoples’ anger were RK Imo Singh – Sagolband MLA and son-in-law of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, Dr. Sapam Ranjan – Health and Public Relations Minister and Konthoujam MLA, Thongam Biswajit- Power Minister and Thongju MLA, K Govindas-PWD Minister and Bishnupur MLA , Nishikant Sapam, Keishamthong MLA, Thangjam Arun Kumar, Wangkhei MLA, Sapam Kunjakeswar, Patsoi MLA, Khwairakpam Raghumani, Uripok MLA, Soraisham Kebi Devi, Naoriya Pakhanglakpa MLA, and Khumukcham Joykisan, Thangmeiband MLA whose houses were vandalised and properties set ablaze. CM Biren Singh’s personal residence at Luwangsangbam near Koirangei army camp was also attacked.
