Three days after a 27-year-old man was lynched in a village in Imphal West, the Manipur Police suspended as many as four policemen in connection with the incident.

An inquiry has also been ordered after a video circulating on social media showed armed police personnel present at the spot during the lynching incident.

Sources said that police personnel were sent to the village after receiving information about the lynching but locals blocked their vehicles and the policemen reached the village on foot.

27-year-old Farooque Khan who hails from Lilong Haoreibi in Thoubal district was attacked in Imphal West District’s Tharoijam on Thursday. Of the 13 people involved in the incident, five people were arrested on Friday.

A purported video circulating on social media shows at least three khaki clad men around Khan who was slightly moving while lying on the field.

Residents of Lilong Haoreibi, who formed a joint action committee claiming that Khan was innocent, met Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Sunday demanding that police personnel present during the incident should be sacked.

As many as four police personnel sacked for not acting on the spot to prevent the lynching.
