The Manipur government have issued a show-cause notice to Airtel, Manipur for providing internet services to un-whitelisted mobile numbers in some areas of the state, violating the state government’s suspension order of mobile internet data and VPN services is still in effect.
The Manipur government on Thursday, wrote to Ashish Bansal, Chief Technical Officer, Airtel,Imphal and stated that owing to the state’s volatile law and order situation, telecom services have been suspended in the state since May 3, 2023. The government has also been reviewing at regular intervals whether to open the internet services in phases. However, despite earlier repeated advice/ instructions,the service provider has provided internet access to un-whitelisted mobile numbers in some areas of Churachandpur and adjoining areas of Bishnupur district(specially in Phubakchao Ikhai areas).
The state government stated that the act is a serious failure on the part of the service provider and that this failure may have resulted in the dissemination of inflammatory and provocative clips, messages, and messages on various social media platforms, which may have increased communal tension, hatred, and rumors during this volatile period for the state and could have also aggravated the ongoing law and order crisis in the state.
Stating that the act is a violation of the government orders suspending mobile internet data, VPN services, the state issued the show-cause notice to Airtel and sought a written explanation from it by 12:00 p.m. today explaining under what compelling circumstances such serious lapses have occurred, who is responsible for such careless move, and why appropriate legal action should not be taken against Airtel for violation of the government orders.
The state further said that if an appropriate explanation or response is not received within the allotted time frame, all services provided by Airtel, including internet services in Manipur will have to be discontinued without further notice.
