Meghalaya Govt to Replace Rusted Electric Poles and Outsated Conductors Statewide to Boost Public Safety

In a major step towards modernising power infrastructure and enhancing public safety, Meghalaya Government is set to undertake the replacement of rusted electric poles and outdated conductors across the state. This announcement follows public outcry over recent incidents, including the electrocution of an elephant near the Assam-Meghalaya border, which was reportedly caused by faulty electrical infrastructure. In response, the state government is accelerating its efforts to prevent similar accidents and ensure safer electricity supply systems.

“We are systematically replacing both electric poles and conductors wherever deterioration is identified. Safety remains our top priority,” said Mondal.

The minister further stated that around one lakh rusted electric poles across the state have been identified for replacement. In addition to new poles, aerial bundled conductors insulated wires that reduce the chances of electrocution and electricity theft will be deployed in areas prone to technical faults, tree-related damage, or unauthorised power tapping.

“This includes places where tree branches fall on lines or frequent disruptions occur. We are switching to aerial bundled conductors in such areas for greater safety,” he added.

While addressing concerns about the reliability of the power supply, Mondal reassured the public that there are no plans for scheduled load-shedding. He noted that Meghalaya’s hydroelectric reserves, bolstered by the monsoon, are currently stable.

Regarding transformer replacements, the Minister said, “This is a continuous process. A transformer might fail again due to overloading, lightning, or other issues. So, even after a replacement, problems may still arise elsewhere. It’s an ongoing effort.”

When asked if this initiative falls under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), Mondal clarified, “Not directly. But wherever upgrades are necessary, we include them as part of our efforts.”

He also confirmed that the project is not limited to Shillong but will cover the entire state.

Addressing safety in forested regions, particularly where high-tension lines pass through, Mondal pointed out that such lines are installed with sufficient height to avoid human contact. “But in cases where wires snap due to wind or lightning, we take immediate corrective measures,” he assured.

Reacting to a viral video reportedly showing children hanging on electric poles in West Khasi Hills, the minister said he was unaware of the incident but promised a follow-up. “I will find out about it,” he said.
