Manipur Congress MLAs Ready to Resign Along With Ruling MLAs If PM Modi Fails to Resolve Crisis, Says Former CM Ibobi

Criticizing both the state and central governments, Ibobi Singh alleged a complete breakdown of constitutional machinery in Manipur.

The Congress leadership in Manipur has expressed its willingness to resign en masse along with ruling party MLAs if Prime Minister Narendra Modi fails to take urgent and decisive steps to address the ongoing crisis in the state, which has persisted for over a year. Addressing the media, former Chief Minister and Congress Legislature Party leader O Ibobi Singh said the party’s MLAs would not hesitate to step down if no resolution is reached.

Ibobi called upon Chief Minister N Biren Singh to engage directly with the Prime Minister upon his return from his foreign trip, highlighted the need for collective discussions with all MLAs, including those in opposition. “We appeal to the Chief Minister to seek a meeting with the Prime Minister, involving all MLAs, to demand an immediate solution. If no action is taken, being members of the Assembly holds no meaning. We are ready to resign along with ruling MLAs,” Ibobi stated.

Criticizing both the state and central governments, Ibobi Singh alleged a complete breakdown of constitutional machinery in Manipur. “The situation in Manipur is the result of total failure by the double-engine government. Constitutional machinery has collapsed. The killing of infants, even those less than a year old, and women is highly condemnable. We never imagined such a level of violence could occur,” he said.

Despite the deteriorating law and order situation, Ibobi opposed the imposition of President’s Rule in the state, stating that the people of Manipur do not support such a measure. “The present government cannot shirk its responsibility,” he added.

Manipur Inner Lok Sabha MP Bimol Akoijam describing the situation as a collective administrative failure. Referring to the recent Jiribam incident where six civilians, including a 10-month-old infant, were killed, Akoijam termed the act as terrorism and called for international condemnation.

“The government has forgotten its responsibilities. It has failed to protect innocent people and created confusion among them. This is not governance but a drama,” Bimol remarked.

He further condemned the violence, saying, “The killing of infants and women has crossed all limits. Violence cannot resolve political grievances; such issues should be discussed peacefully. Political leaders must not encourage such heinous acts.”

Commenting on the recent imposition of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) in six police station areas, Bimol highlighted the long-standing opposition to the act in Manipur. “The people have fought against AFSPA for years, and we remember the consequences it brought, including the recent Oting incident. This act is not welcome,” he asserted.
