JD(U) opposes Citizenship Bill, terms bill a threat to secularism

Nitish Kumar-led Janata Dal-United, an alliance partner of NDA has decided to oppose the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. The decision to oppose the Bill was taken at the national executive of the JD(U) held at the party’s headquarters yesterday in New Delhi.
JDU general secretary, KC Tyagi said that the Bill is a threat to the secular character of the country and the party is opposed to it. He further said that the Bill will also be a threat to the unity and integrity of the northeastern states, particularly Assam.
Notably, on May 17, a delegation of the All Assam Students Union met Bihar Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar and urged him to oppose the proposed Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. Nitish Kumar had also assured the AASU delegation that the JD(U) will oppose the Bill.
Meanwhile, JD(U) has made it clear that it will not support the Bharatiya Janata Party in elections in Mizoram, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
