The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued further alert for rain ravaged Dima Hasao district in Assam. With roads, bridges and railway tracks already damaged in the last spell of heavy rain, the IMD alert says that more heavy to heavy rainfall has predicted for the hill district.

The alert has been issued with effect from June 5 till June 15.

In view of this situation, the district authorities have already geared up for taking precautionary measures and deal with any kind of eventuality.

District Commissioner and Chairman of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) Simanta Kumar Das briefing newspersons said, “We have received information from the State Disaster Management Authority that in the next 5 days there are high possibilities of heavy rainfall in our district. In view of this as a precautionary measure, we appeal people in the district that they should remain indoors during this period. If they (those residing in vulnerable areas) sense any sort of trouble, they should voluntarily move to safer places.”

To ensure safety of those travelling in and out of Dima Hasao, traffic advisories have also been issued.

“We have issued traffic advisories. We have seen that the stretch between Jatinga, Narimbanglo and Harangajao, NHAI construction is going on. In some places the construction has finished and in few other places it is underway. During the rainfall on the first of this month, it was witnessed there was overtopping in some areas of Harangajao, where roads have been damaged by overflowing water, so during the evening we have restricted the movement of heavy vehicles. Accordingly, advisory has been issued in this regard. Normal vehicles will continue to ply along the route. We urge everyone to travel only during the day time. Since our district is hilly, and there are possibilities of landslides so we have issued the advisory. Once again we appeal everyone not to travel during rain and night,” the Dima Hasao DC informed.

Mentioning the preparations being made to accommodate affected people, DC Das said, “We have block committees in every blocks, and certain educational institutions have been identified as relief camps. Whenever the time comes to set up relief camp, we will shift the affected people to those relief camps. We also have already notified for the Relief Camp Committee. The school in which the relief camps will be set up, the Principal of that school will be the Member Secretary of that Committee and the Gaon Burah will be the President of that Committee. VDPs and senior citizens will also be part of these committees.”
