India records biggest single-day spike in over 4 months; Assam reports 52 fresh cases

As many as 47,262 people tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday, with 23,907 recoveries and 275 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

This is the biggest spike in daily cases the country has seen in over four months. India had last recorded over 47,000 cases in early November 2020.

The overall tally has mounted to 1,17,34,058, including 3,68,457 active cases and 1,12,05,160 recoveries. The death toll has gone up to 1,60,441.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), as many as 10,25,628 samples were tested on March 23. A total of 23,64,38,861 samples had been tested up to March 23.

In Assam, 52 new Coronavirus cases have been reported on Tuesday, while one succumbed to the infection. The total number of active cases in the state stands at 347.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra, Punjab, Karnataka, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh altogether account for 80.5 per cent of the total cases registered in the last 24 hours.

A total of 5,08,41,286 COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered in the country so far.
