Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma paid his obeisance at the iconic Moinbari Satra at Sarbhog this morning on the occasion of Bhogali Bihu. During his visit, Chief Minister Sarma also took blessings from Satradhikar Ganesh Chandra Das and met his family members.

Addressing media persons, Chief Minister Sarma extended his greetings for Magh Bihu to the people of Assam. He added that the government is working on ways to bring back the Satra to its original location soon. CM Sarma also assured that necessary funds will be allocated to revamp the ‘Satra’s’ infrastructure.

It may be mentioned here that the Satra was temporarily shifted to Sarbhog in 2005 owing to heavy erosion. The Satra (Neo-Vaishnavite Monastery of Assam) was originally set up in the riverine area of Brahmaputra at the border of present-day Barpeta and Bongaigaon, by Narayan Das Thakur Aata, a devout follower of Srimanta Sankardeva.

Erosion forced the district administration to shift the Satra to its current location in Chanta Bari near Sarbhog in the 1990s.
