Amid chanting of Tai Ahom prayers, preceded by a gun salute and band played by the Assam Police,  the three-time chief minister’s mortal remains were consigned to flames by his son Gaurav Gogoi.

Before the cremation rites, a final wreath-laying ceremony was held at the cremation ground where leaders cutting across party lines including Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Health and Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and State BJP president Ranjit Dass paid their last respects to the political stalwart.

The funeral procession of the former Chief Minister began in Guwahati on Thursday morning. Scores took part in the funeral procession and gathered at the cremation site to bid adieu to the veteran Congress leader.

As per his wishes, the body of Gogoi has been taken to different places of worship.

The mortal remains of Tarun Gogoi were taken to his official residence from Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra. After rituals, the mortal remains were taken to a church at Rukminigaon area in the city.

Later, the remains were taken to the Namghar at Zoo Road, then to Sukreswar temple at Panbazar and then to Ugratara temple near Latasil.

As a mark of respect to the people’s leader, the state government has declared a half-holiday as the last rites of Tarun Gogoi will be performed in Guwahati.

Tarun Gogoi, one of Assam’s tallest political leaders, breathed his last at the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on November 23 after a long battle with post-Covid complications.
