An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale hit Mizoram’s Thenzawl at around 5:15 am today.
According to National Center for Seismology (NCS), the epicentre of the quake was 73km southeast of Thenzawl.
“Earthquake of Magnitude:6.1, Occurred on 26-11-2021, 05:15:38 IST, Lat: 22.77 & Long: 93.23, Depth: 12 Km ,Location: 73km SE of Thenzawl, Mizoram,”NCS tweeted.
According to witness accounts posted on the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre’s (EMSC) website and users on Twitter, the quake was felt in Bangladesh’s Chittagong and as far away as Kolkata, some 280 miles (450.62 km) from Aizawl.
However, no damage to property or human casualties have been reported till now.
Earlier on November 20 an earthquake of 4.1 magnitude with epicenter in Kamrup district, hit Assam at 1.12 pm.
Mizoram reported an earthquake of magnitude 3.1 on the Richter scale earlier on February this year .
It may be mentioned that, the Northeast is highly prone to earthquakes as the Indian Plate continues to subduct beneath the Eurasian Plate thus getting affected by collisional tectonics.
