The closure of the bridge was implemented as part of security measures during the election period to ensure the safety and smooth conduct of the elections.

The Zokhawthar bridge, a vital link between Mizoram’s Champhai district in India with Myanmar, has been reopened today after its temporary closure due to elections for the sole parliamentary constituency in Mizoram.

The closure of the bridge was implemented as part of security measures during the election period to ensure the safety and smooth conduct of the elections.

With the conclusion of the elections on April 19, the bridge has been reopened today.

However, reports from Zokhawthar Branch YMA President said that though the border has been reopened, movements will be restricted unlike before with strict surveillance by the Assam Rifles at the bridge and other connectivity through Tiau river.

Exceptions will be made for individuals facing medical emergencies, students commuting for education, and other emergencies, stated the paramilitary force.

The Assam Rifles also stated that the Zokhawthar border will be open till April 30, with complete closure from May 1, 2024, onwards.

It is worth mentioning that Zokhawthar border serves as a vital route for trade, commerce, and people-to-people interaction between India and Myanmar.
