The Tripura government issued a red alert across several districts on Sunday in the wake of severe cyclonic storm ‘Remal’ which is likely to make landfall between Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal coasts by midnight.

The storm is expected to make landfall around 11 PM tonight, prompting extensive precautionary measures.

Brijesh Pandey, Secretary of the Revenue Department (Disaster Management), announced this during a press conference at the Civil Secretariat in Agartala on Sunday.

He said that all schools, educational institutions, and ICDS centers to remain close on May 27th and 28th. Additionally, all flights arriving from Kolkata to Agartala are canceled until 9 AM on Monday to ensure passenger safety.

This decision follows a high-level administrative meeting attended by Chief Secretary JK Sinha, top security force officials, and representatives of the NDRF and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF). The meeting focused on coordinating the state’s response to the impending storm.

In preparation for the cyclone, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been requested to mobilize a team to Santirbazar, strategically positioning them to assist South Tripura and Gomati Districts which are likely to be affected more being close to the coastal areas in Bangladesh.

SDRF teams are also on standby, ready to respond to any emergencies that may arise.

The Food Department has been tasked with ensuring the availability of food and essential supplies to prevent shortages during the storm.

Meanwhile, the Fishery Department has issued alerts to fishing communities, advising them to avoid entering lakes, rivers, and reservoirs for fishing activities.

The state government has assured residents that all necessary measures are in place to manage the cyclone’s impact effectively. They urge citizens not to panic and to stay informed through official channels.

The cyclone is projected to continue moving northwards, intensifying into a severe cyclonic storm with maximum sustained wind speeds of 110-120 kmph, gusting up to 135 kmph.

The landfall is anticipated around 11 PM tonight near Khepupara and Sagar Island which is close to the Bay of Bengal and 100 km from Kolkata, bringing potential heavy rainfall and strong winds to the region.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as needed to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents.
