Indian billionarie Gautam Adani meets Bhutan King, PM; signs MoU for 570 MW green hydro plant

The ambitious Gelephu Mindfulness City in Bhutan has the backing of India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi and is located less than 50 km from Assam.
Gautam Adani, Adani Group chairperson and the world’s second richest Indian met Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuk and Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay on Sunday.
Adani announced the signing of an MoU for a 570 MW green hydro plant in the country and said that he was inspired by King Wangchuk’s masterplan for the Gelephu Mindfulness City, the dream project of the King that is coming up just within 50 kms from Assam.
Adani mentioned that he is keen to collaborate in the development of the Mindfulness City.
Post his meeting with the King, Adani wrote on X, “Honoured to meet His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck of Bhutan. Inspired by his vision for Bhutan and the ambitious ecofriendly masterplan for Gelephu Mindfulness City, including large computing centers and data facilities. Excited to collaborate on these transformative initiatives as also on green energy management for a carbon negative nation!”

In another tweet he posted after his meeting with Bhutan PM Tobgay, Adani wrote, “”Absolutely fascinating meeting with Dasho Tshering Tobgay, Hon. Prime Minister of Bhutan. Signed an MoU with DGPC for a 570 MW green hydro plant in Chukha province. Admirable to see @PMBhutan advancing the vision of His Majesty The King and pursuing broad ranging infrastructure initiatives across the kingdom. Looking forward to working closely on hydro & other infra in Bhutan.”

On December 19, during his National Day adderss, Bhutan King had announced details about the Mindfulness City and creation of a Special Administrative Region where a set of new laws would be applicable to attract mega global investments.
This 1000 sq km Gelephu City Project, located less than 50 km from the northeastern Indian state of Assam, will develop into a “mindfulness city” that will capitalise on Bhutan’s strengths in tourism, wellness and infrastructure companies. The Gelephu Project will include an international airport, zero emission industries and encourage investment from specially screened global players. The project has the backing of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
