Customs seizes 30 gold bars worth over Rs 2.83 crore in Manipur, 1 arrested

In a major breakthrough, the Imphal Customs Division seized as many as 30 gold biscuits of foreign origin on Saturday from a driver who was caught trying to smuggle it in a Hyundai Creta in the Kuraopokpi area of Kakching district.
The total weight of the confiscated gold bars is 4.980 kilograms and is worth around Rs 2.83 crore.
According to Customs officials, the gold smuggler was arrested under Section 104 of the Customs Act, 1962 and identified as one Thongkolun Mate, 62, a resident of Sibong Khudengthabi, Chandel.
Acting on specific inputs regarding the smuggling of gold at the Kuraopokpi area of Kakching district, sleuths of the Customs intercepted the Hyundai Creta (bearing registration No MN-O3C0081), a release stated.
It stated that the accused (driver) along with the Hyundai Creta was taken to the Customs office at Pallel, Imphal for checking and the gold biscuits were found concealed under the rear seat of the vehicle.
Further investigation to nab the other offender(s) in the case is underway, it added.
