Curfew relaxed for few hours again today in Manipur districts

Residents were seen rushing to the markets to stock up on essentials including medicines, vegetables, food items and other essentials

Curfew was again relaxed today for few more hours across places in Manipur even as the state remained more or less peaceful in the past 24 hours with no incidents of violence reported from any part of the state that saw riots, arson, clashes and violence since May 3.
Curfew was relaxed from 7 to 10 am in Churachandpur district, one of the worst hit districts of the state. In Jiribam, the curfew was relaxed from 5 am to 10 am, while in Imphal West, curfew was relaxed between 5 am to 8 am.

People rushed to the nearby markets to stock up on essentials including medicines, vegetables, other food items and eatables. People complained of high prices of vegetables and several food items. Supplies to the state was hit Manipur was under complete shutdown since May 3 because of violence that had rocked the state, bringing life to a standstill.

Taking stock of the situation, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday assured the public that the state of affairs in Manipur remains under control as the curfew remains in force. He urged the people to maintain peace and harmony during these challenging times.

Army and Assam Rifles continue to keep a strict vigil so that the situation is contained and no flare up takes place.
“Over 100 columns of Army & Assam Rifles have been working tirelessly in the past 96 hours plus and in order to significantly enhance the surveillance capability in Manipur, employment of aviation assets is being intensified. In particular, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles & Helicopters have been pressed into action for surveillance not only in hinterland but also along Indo Myanmar Border,” Army and Assam Rifles said in a statement today.

Speaking to India Today/ Aaj Tak, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the situation in Manipur was under control and the Manipur government would consult all stakeholders before taking a decision on the matter of Scheduled Tribe-status for the Meitei community. It is the Manipur High Court’s order of April 20 asking the state government for recommendations to grant ST status to the Meiteis that led to the massive unrest in the state leaving at least 20 people dead.

The Supreme Court bench, comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices PS Narashima and JB Pardiwala, will be hearing a batch of petitions regarding the Manipur situation today. Among the petitions to be addressed are one filed by a BJP MLA and Hills Area Committee chairman Dinganglung Gangmei challenging the Manipur High Court’s order regarding the Scheduled Tribe status of the Meitei community, as well as a PIL filed by a tribal outfit seeking an SIT probe into the recent violence in Manipur.

Union Minister for Development of the North Eastern Region, G Kishan Reddy, said on Sunday that the Central government is open to talks to resolve the conflict in Manipur.
