Chuaungo, who has earlier served as the Mizoram Chief Secretary, submitted his resignation to Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati

Lalnunmawia Chuaungo has resigned as Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) of the Mizoram Information Commission. He will remit office by June 19-20. Chuaungo, who has earlier served as the Mizoram Chief Secretary, submitted his resignation to Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati, Raj Bhavan sources said on Tuesday.

Though he is still tight-lipped about the reasons for his resignation, sources in the state Pradesh Congress Committee said that he is going to join the Congress party and is likely to contest from the prestigious Aizawl North –I assembly seat in the coming assembly elections due to be held in November of December.

State PCC sources also said that he may be appointed as Vice President of the party by replacing the present incumbent Lal Thanzara (younger brother of five-time chief minister) or creation of two posts of vice president.

Chuaungo, a 1987 Gujarat cadre Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, was known to be close to PM Narendra Modi when the latter was Chief Minister of Gujarat.

He was on inter-cadre deputation from Gujarat to AGMUT cadre and transferred to Mizoram.

Chuaungo was in the news before the state assembly polls in 2018 when he was removed by the Election Commission of India following a complaint filed by the then state Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) SB Shashank that the former had interfered in the poll process. He was then the principal secretary of the Mizoram home department.

He took over as the state Chief Secretary in February 2019 after the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pension on April 2, 2018 issued a notification that he would continue his inter-cadre deputation till February 28, 2022, the date of his superannuation.

However, he was appointed as the CIC, 4 months before his retirement as the state Chief Secretary.
