CM criticised China's lack of adherence to international norms, pointing out that it is not a signatory to the United Nations water treaty.
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has reiterated his strong opposition to China’s plan to construct a 60,000 MW hydropower project and said that this dam will have disastrous implications for downstream areas in India. Expressing serious concerns, CM Khandu said if China plans to use this colossal dam as a water bomb, it will destroy not just Arunachal Pradesh but Assam and Bangladesh too.
“Hydropower is one of the cleanest forms of energy, but there must be a limit. But coming up with a 60,000 MW dam is a huge threat. If China decides to use the dam as a water bomb, it will destroy not just Arunachal but Assam and as far as Bangladesh. The dam will have catastrophic consequences downstream in India”, CM Khandu said.
“I am discussing with people of the state about the multipurpose dam project on the Siang river which will come up to counter China’s mega dam and ensure our water security,” CM Khandu said.
The Chief Minister criticised China’s lack of adherence to international norms, pointing out that it is not a signatory to the United Nations water treaty. “If China were a signatory, there wouldn’t be so much concern. But since they are not, we should be worried,” he remarked.
CM Khandu was speaking on the sidelines of a programme on Environment and Security in Itanagar today.
Khandu also emphasised Arunachal Pradesh’s vulnerability due to its shared border with Tibet which is ruled by China and said, “Looking at past history, we cannot rely on China.”
