Prof. Shukla strongly condemned the recent attack on Dr. Singh at the Shillong campus and said it was a serious matter that needed urgent action.
North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) Vice Chancellor Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla announced that he will form a committee to investigate the attack on Assistant Professor Dr. Alok Kumar Singh and other cases of threats against faculty members.
The committee will work to identify the miscreants and recommend strict action.
Prof. Shukla made the statement after holding a crucial video conference meeting with NEHU faculty members on Friday. The meeting took place from the NEHU camp office in Guwahati, where Registrar Omkar Singh was also present alongside the Vice Chancellor.
Speaking to Northeast Live, Prof. Shukla revealed that only one-third of the faculty members could attend the meeting. He said that 90 percent of the faculty were willing to join but miscreants threatened and stopped them from participating. He alleged that miscreants even closed the university gates and physically prevented faculty members from attending the meeting.
Prof. Shukla strongly condemned the recent attack on Dr. Singh at the Shillong campus and said it was a serious matter that needed urgent action. He further revealed that several other teachers also faced similar threats but only Dr. Singh came forward to report it officially.
Speaking about the ongoing protests against him, Prof. Shukla said he has officially resumed his duties as the Vice Chancellor of NEHU. However, due to security reasons, he is currently operating from the NEHU camp office in Guwahati and not from the Shillong or Tura campuses. He assured that once the Central and State governments provide proper security, he will immediately return to work from both campuses.
Prof. Shukla invited the agitating groups for an open discussion to solve the issues through dialogue. He made it clear that there cannot be any acting Vice Chancellor and that he remains the rightful and functioning head of the university.
