The opposition Naga People’s Front and civil society groups in Nagaland have asked Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio to raise his voice and ensure that the interests of the Nagas are protected in the forthcoming Naga Peace Accord.
They said the Nagaland government has a responsibility to tell the Centre in clear terms that the rights of the Nagas cannot be compromised in favour of the interest of the other communities.
These remarks were made by leaders of the opposition NPF and the Naga Hoho during the debate show Northeast Tonight on Friday hosted by our Editor-in-chief Wasbir Hussain.
Talking on the matter, NPF member Achum-bemo Kikon said that they expect the Nagaland Chief Minister to take up a firm stand in front of New Delhi as Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh recently did where he asserted that the Naga Accord must not affect Manipur’s terrirotial integrity.
Naga Hoho’s Elu Ndang also stated that Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio must take up a strong stand just like the Manipur CM did. He added that the the hopes and aspirations of the Naga people must be upheld.
Earlier, Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh visited New Delhi with a delegation where he held discussions on the matter with the top leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. There he had categorically stated that Manipur would not compromise with its territorial integrity for the sake of the Naga Accord.
