The BJP which toppled the Congress-Mizo National Front (MNF) coalition in November is all set to form the next government in the Mara Autonomous District Council in Mizoram.

Mizoram Governor Kambhampati Hari Babu on Wednesday appointed BJP’s M Laikaw as the Chief Executive Member of the MADC and directed the latter to prove a majority within 30 days.

Earlier, Laikaw with 12 BJP members had staked a claim to form the next council claiming the support of 3 MNF MDCs as well.

Laikaw claimed to have the support of 15 MDCs in the 25-member house. Sources said that Laikaw will be soon inducted as the CEM.

In the most recent MADC elections, held in May, the BJP emerged as the single largest party, winning 12 of the 25 seats, while the MNF took 9 and the Congress took 4. No party received a majority.
