Fear of displacement has gripped Chakmas living in the frontier state after Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju recently spoke of steps being taken to relocate

Fear of displacement has gripped Chakmas living in the frontier state after Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju recently spoke of steps being taken to relocate them outside the state.

The Chakma Hajong community, which has been settled in the state since the late 1960s has expressed strong reservations to the statements made by both Khandu and Rijiju stating that there are the genuine residents of Arunachal and will not accept any move to resettle them outside.

Rights bodies and traditional heads representing the Chakma community have also expressed serious concern over the development and resolved to fight against the government’s alleged move to uproot them.

Chakma bodies said that it is unfortunate that even after close to 60 years they are being allegedly branded as refugees in a state where close to 90 percent of the present population was born.
