Jayanta Bora is yet to formally join the Congress party
Putting all speculations to rest and amid high political drama in Assam ahead of the bypolls on November 13, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in a late night announcement last night, announced the name of Jayanta Bora as its candidate for the Behali seat.
Interesting to note that Jayanta Bora had recently quit the BJP and is yet to formally join the Congress.
The Behali seat became a point of contention among the allies in the Asom Sanmilita Morcha (United Opposition Forum) of 15 parties as there was a tussle among the alliance partners and the Congress about who will be the candidate for the seat.
Following the differences, Assam Congress President Bhupen Borah resigned as president of the Morcha.
In his resignation letter, Borah cited tremendous pressure on him and issues arising within the alliance related to the uncertainty surrounding the candidate for the Behali constituency.
The Morcha had decided to field a CPI-ML candidate for the Behali seat to which the Congress had apparently agreed but later wanted a change. This triggered the differences finally leading to the collapse of the Morcha.
The last date for filing nominations in the five seats is October 25. The papers will be scrutinised on October 28, while October 30 is the last date for the withdrawal of nominations.
The polling will take place on November 13, and the votes will be counted on November 23.
