Meet Assam’s Para-Cyclist Rakesh Banik, Who Will Cross 6 Countries, Cover 9,000 Kms From Moscow to Guwahati To Create Awareness About Assam

As he gears up for this remarkable adventure, the entire nation, especially the Northeast, takes pride in his achievement.
Proving that determination knows no boundaries, Rakesh Banik, Assam’s first para-cyclist, is set to embark on an extraordinary journey, cycling from Moscow, Russia, to Guwahati, India.
Covering an astounding 9,000 kilometers across 6 countries- Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Tibet, Nepal then Guwahati, Banik’s expedition, aptly named ‘Volga to Brahmaputra,’ will be the first long-distance journey by a para cyclist from India.
Rakesh Banik said, “Rakesh Banik shared, “I initially planned to cycle from the UK to Guwahati, but due to some official procedures and funding constraints, it was not possible. Now, I have decided to embark on a journey from Moscow to Guwahati to spread awareness about Assam. I want the world to know about the state’s beauty, heritage, culture, and traditions, and encourage people to visit and explore Assam.”
What makes this feat even more remarkable is Banik’s resilience. Having lost his right leg in a road accident in 2012, he refused to let adversity define him. With the help of an artificial limb, he has shattered physical limitations and is now preparing for a mission that will inspire millions.
A resident of Assam’s Nagaon district, Banik has become a symbol of courage and perseverance.
His journey will not just be about crossing borders but also about breaking barriers challenging perceptions of disability and celebrating the power of human will.
His expedition stands as a testament to the fact that no challenge is too great for a determined spirit.
As he gears up for this remarkable adventure, the entire nation, especially the Northeast, takes pride in his achievement.
Earlier in the week, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma lauded Banik’s zeal and extended support for his expedition.
Taking to X, CM Sarma said, “Rakesh Banik was one among the host of people I met today in my office. He is an industrious para-athlete who plans to promote Assam by cycling from the Moscow to India. Such perseverance and dedication among our youth will fuel the Assam Growth Story in years to come.”
