Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said the dates for the Assam Assembly election are likely to be announced by the Election Commission of India in the first week of March.
The Prime Minister made the announcement while addressing a gathering at Silapathar in Dhemaji where he launched a total of five projects, worth more than Rs 3,000 crore.
On his third visit to Assam within the last 30 days, ahead of the State Assembly election in the state, Prime Minister Modi on Monday, inaugurated three major projects in the oil sector in Assam and inaugurated Dhemaji Engineering College and also laid the foundation stone of the Sualkuchi Engineering College.
While addressing the gathering, PM Modi said, “Before the EC announced the exact dates for election I will try my level best to visit Assam, West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Pondicherry. The way you people have come in large numbers just to motivate us is commendable. I am speechless and thankful for your blessings. Our government that works with the motto of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas has led to the rapid development of Assam”.
Modi also recalled the contributions of Kalaguri Bishnu Prasad Rabha, Rupkonwar Jyoti Prasad Agarwalla and Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika.
In 2016, the Sonowal-lead BJP won 60 of the 126 assembly seats. The AGP and BPF secured 14 and 12 seats respectively, taking their total strength to 86. On May 24, 2016, Sarbananda Sonowal took oath as Assam Chief Minister. The BJP and its allies dislodged the Congress, which had been in power in Assam for 15 long years.
