Arunachal Pradesh: Bayor made history last year by becoming the first Indian to break into the top 10 of the World Poomsae Rankings.
Rupa Bayor, Arunachal Pradesh’s 23-year-old Taekwondo athlete has been selected for the prestigious Target Asian Games Group (TAGG) scheme of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, for the upcoming 2026 Asian Games.
Her inclusion in this elite group is a major milestone for Indian Taekwondo and a moment of pride for the northeastern state.
Bayor made history last year by becoming the first Indian to break into the top 10 of the World Poomsae Rankings in October 2023.
Her achievements include winning a gold medal at the national team trials for the 8th Asian Taekwondo Championships in 2022, where she secured India’s first-ever medal in the competition.
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu extended his heartfelt congratulations to Bayor via social media. He wrote, “Your selection as an elite athlete under this prestigious scheme reflects your hard work, discipline, and exceptional talent. We are proud of your achievement.”
Bayor has been vocal about the challenges faced by Taekwondo athletes in India, including inadequate funding and limited government support. She has called for greater recognition and investment in the sport to help it thrive nationally.
Her selection under TAGG not only acknowledges her talent but also offers hope for improved infrastructure and backing for Taekwondo in India. With the 2026 Asian Games on the horizon, Rupa Bayor’s journey continues to inspire young athletes, particularly from the Northeast, to dream big and aim high on the international stage.
