The Indian men's recurve archery team stunned the reigning Olympic champions South Korea and won gold medal at the Archery World Cup Stage 1.

Proud moment for Sikkim. State’s very own Tarundeep Rai is among India’s gold medal-winning team at the Archery World Cup 2024 held in Shanghai, China.

The Indian men’s recurve archery team of archers–Tarundeep Rai, Dhiraj Bommadevara and Pravin Jadhav faced off against South Korea, led by the Tokyo Olympics gold medal-winning team of Kim Woojin and Kim Je Deok. Lee Woo Seok was the third member.

They stunned the reigning Olympic champions South Korea and won gold medal at the Archery World Cup Stage 1.

In a fight between the competition’s top two seeds, the Indians maintained their cool and defeated the strong Koreans without dropping a set. India won 5-1 (57-57, 57-55, 55-53), bringing their gold medal total to five in the season-opening global extravaganza.

Notably, this is the Indian men’s recurve archery team’s first World Cup victory over the archery powerhouse, and it will boost their chances of qualifying for the upcoming Paris Olympics.

Overall, India have won five gold, one silver and one bronze in the competition.

Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang in a Facebook post congratulated the team on its victory and wrote, “My heartfelt congratulations and resounding encouragement go out to the International Archer from Sikkim, our own Shri Tarundeep Rai along with the formidable trio of renowned archers representing our country, including Shri Dhiraj Bommadevara and Shri Pravin Jadhav, for their spectacular feat in stunning the reigning Olympic champions South Korea and clinching the Gold Medal in the on-going World Cup Stage 1. India’s remarkable performance at the World Cup Archery, securing multiple medals, including a breathtaking gold against South Korea by the men’s recurve team, is a testament to our prowess in the sport. Let’s continue to raise the bar and maintain this stellar momentum, keeping up the exceptional work!”

In several international archery competitions, Tarundeep Rai has represented India and has brought home many medals.

Rai has competed in three Olympic games, making his debut at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

He won a silver medal in the men’s team event at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon.

At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Rai, along with Atanu Das and Pravin Jadhav, won a historic bronze medal in the men’s team event, which was India’s first-ever medal in archery at the Olympics.

Rai has been honoured with several awards for his achievements in archery, including the Arjuna Award in 2011 and the Padma Shri in 2021.
