South Tura legislator Agatha Sangma resigned as the member of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly yesterday evening to pave the way for her brother and Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to contest the seat.

Agatha submitted her resignation to Deputy Speaker Timothy Shira at his office chamber.
With her resignation, the election commission can now start the process of by-poll in the constituency.

Chief minister Conrad Sangma, who is yet to be elected to a constituency, will have to get elected to the Assembly within September 6 as the stipulated time of six month expires on that day after he took oath on March 6.

Earlier last month Congress MLA Martin Danggo also resigned from the Ranikor seat. Meanwhile, according to sources, following Agatha’s resignation, chief minister Conrad Sangma will be the common candidate of the MDA in South Tura.
