The Joint Action Committee formed against the killing of former Zeliangrong Baudi President Athuan Abonmai has threatened to impose a total shutdown of 2 critical national highways in the state for 48 hours from midnight tomorrow if the state government does not immediately hand over the case to the NIA.

Not only this, the highway shutdown will be followed by a 48-hour state-wide bandh from September 28th, the JAC warned.
The JAC members met Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh today to demand an NIA probe into the killing of Athuan Abonmai.

JAC convenor Majabung Gangmei also called for early arrest of the perpetrators besides demanding the suspension of Tamenglong DC and SP. The JAC also urged the Manipur CM to accord appropriate compensation to the family of the deceased. The JAC warned of imposing total shutdown along the National Highway-29 connecting Imphal-Dimapur and National Highway-37 connecting Imphal-Jiribam with effect from midnight tomorrow if the government fails to fulfil the demand.

It may be mentioned that the body of the deceased is still lying at the RIMS morgue and autopsy is yet to be conducted. The JAC is firm on its stand to not claim the body until their demands are fulfilled.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh had said that the government would hand over the probe to the NIA if a rebel group in ceasefire with the Government of India is found involved in the killing of Athuan Abonmai. Not only this, the state government had also suspended as many as 17 police personnel in connection with the incident.

Abonmai was abducted from outside the venue of a government programme and later his bullet-ridden body was retrieved by the police. Abonmai’s abduction took place in front of police personnel who reacted late to the incident.

Women at the Langol Taung village in Imphal West also took to the streets in protest against the killing of Athuan Abonmai. The protestors staged a sit-in demonstration and demanded that justice be delivered.
