A 27-year-old man was thrashed to death by an irate mob on suspecting him to be a car lifter. This is the second such incident that took place in the Northeast after two young boys from Guwahati were mob lynched in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district.

The deceased has been identified as Md Farooq, a resident of Lilong Mayai Leikai under Thoubal district, who was mercilessly beaten to death by a group of people on suspicion of being a car lifter.

According to the locals of the Tharoijam village, Farooq had allegedly entered the house of a local to steal a vehicle in the wee hours on Thursday.

Locals further alleged that Farooq, along with few others had tried to escape in a vehicle following which the vehicle was intercepted by the locals about 500 meters away from the house.

Farooq, along with others managed to flee from the spot to a nearby paddy field. The irate mob in no time got a hold of Farooq, who was severely thrashed in an open ground in front of locals of the area.

Meanwhile, violent protests erupted at Tharoijam village on the outskirts of Imphal west district as hundreds of protesters clashed with the police demanding the release of the 5 people picked up by the police on suspicion of being allegedly involved in a mob lynching incident that took place on September 13.

As the situation turned ugly, police resorted to firing tear gas shells in the area to disperse the irate protesters.
