CM Manik Saha is contesting from Town Bordowali, the seat he had won in 2022 after being selected to replace Biplab Deb as the CM of Tripura Voting for 60
The voting for the 60 seats is being held in a single phase. Big names contesting the elections are Chief Minister Manik Saha, Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Deb Barma, state BJP chief Rajib Bhattacharjee, Union Minister and Lok Sabha MP from West Tripura Pratima Bhoumik, 5-time MLA from Agartala, Sudip Roy Barmam of Congress, 4-time MLA and Tripura Congress chief Birajit Sinha. IPFT veteran late NC Debbarma’s daughter Jayanti Debbarma is contesting from the Asharambari constituency.
Besides the national parties like BJP, Congress, CPI-M and CPI, this time, Tripura voters have two new parties to vote for – Tripura’s local party TIPRA Motha launched by former Tripura Congress chief and Tripura’s royal scion Pradyot Deb Barma and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC).
BJP kept its friendship alive with IPFT. Congress joined hands with the CPI-M. Unable to find a suitable friend to fight the polls together TIPRA Motha decided to go solo.
4-times Tripura CM Manik Sarkar is not contesting the elections this time. Sarkar ruled the state since 1998 till 2018. In 2018, history was created when BJP and its ally IPFT put an end to the 25-year Left rule in the state.
The fate of 55 candidates from BJP, 43 from CPI-M, 42 from TIPRA Motha, 28 from Trinamool Congress (AITC), 13 from Congress (INC), 6 from IPFT (BJP’s ally), one each from CPI, RSP and Forward Bloc, and 58 as Independents, 7 from unrecognised parties would be decided by 28,14,584 voter today.
Of the total 3,337 polling stations 97 would be all women polling stations. 44 polling stations have been put up for PWD.
Ten constituencies — Bamutia, Agartala, Town Bardowali in West Tripura, Dhanpur in Sepahijala district, Amarpur in Gomati district, Dharmanagar and Kanchanpur in North Tripura and Surma, Ambassa and Chowmanu constituencies in Dhalai district have the highest number of candidates with six in each seat.
Jubarajnagar constituency in North Tripura, Barjala in West Tripura and Sabroom constituency in South Tripura have lowest number of candidates with two in each seat.
Of the total 3,337 polling stations, 1,128 stations have been identified as vulnerable and 240 as critical. 400 companies of central armed police force (CAPF), 11,000 police and Tripura State Rifles have been deployed in different parts of the state.
The inter-state boundaries with Assam and Mizoram have been sealed for security purpose.
In 2013, there were 345 candidates including 25 women candidates in the fray. In 2018, the total number of candidates contesting the Assembly elections were 297. Twenty-four women candidates were in the fray, only 3 won. In 2013, only 4 of the 25 women candidates won.
The results will be declared on March 2.
