This will be Aditya Golay, son of SKM supremo and Sikkim CM P S Tamang’s second term as MLA
In a big development, Aditya Golay, the candidate from Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM), and son of Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, has won the Soreng-Chakung Assembly seat uncontested after Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) candidate Prem Bahadur Bhandari withdrew his candidature today.
This will be Aditya’s second term as the MLA of Soreng-Chakung. He had won the seat in 2019 with 6,580 votes defeating SDF’s Sancha Raj Subba who polled 6,372 votes.
Golay won unopposed because besides the SDF candidate, there were no other candidate left in fray as the Citizen Action Party (CAP) candidate Pobin Hang Subba was disqualified yesterday after the Election Commission found anomalies in the proposers’ signature.
This win takes the SKM strength in the 32-member Sikkim Assembly to 31.
The tiny Himalayan state has been seeing a lot of political development since yesterday. It now remains to be seen if the other SDF candidate, Daniel Rai, contesting from the Namchi-Shinghithang seat too will pull out of the bypoll race.
Speaking to Northeast Live yesterday, SKM Minister N B Dahal said that both the SDF candidates would withdraw their candidature helping the SKM win both Soreng-Chakung and Namchi-Shinghithang seats.
Tomorrow is the last date for withdrawal of nomination for the bypolls to be held on November 13. The counting of votes will take place on November 23.
