North Sikkim witnessed a remarkable resurgence in tourism as a record-breaking 3,564 tourists visited the region on a single day, April 12. This is the highest single-day footfall since the devastating Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) of 2023.

According to the Permit Cell, the vast majority of visitors were domestic tourists, totalling 3,555, while nine foreign nationals were also recorded. A closer look at the figures shows that 2,876 domestic tourists registered online, including 1,675 males, 1,201 females, and 244 children. An additional 418 registered offline, with 307 males, 111 females, and 17 children.

The logistical scale of this tourism boom was reflected in the movement of 747 registered vehicles entering North Sikkim on the same day.

In October 2023, Sikkim was hit by a catastrophic Glacial Lake Outburst Flood when South Lhonak Lake in North Sikkim breached its boundaries. Triggered by heavy rainfall and possibly worsened by a landslide or glacier collapse, the sudden release of water caused flash floods along the Teesta River.

The disaster resulted in the destruction of bridges, roads, and hydropower infrastructure, with significant loss of life and displacement of residents. North Sikkim, a major tourist hub, was severely affected, and access to the region was restricted for months during recovery efforts.

The recent surge in tourism signifies a strong comeback for the region, reflecting improved infrastructure, successful rehabilitation, and the resilience of the local community.
