The counting of votes is taking place for 3 Municipalities, 21 town councils and 214 wards.

Counting of votes for the Nagaland Urban Local Bodies is underway. Till 5:30 PM today, as per the Nagaland Election Commission, the NDPP has won 92 seats, NPF-12, BJP-8, Congress-5, JDU-5, NPP-4, LJP-2 and 39 Independent candidates have won so far.

The counting of votes is taking place for 3 Municipalities, 21 town councils and 214 wards.

In Wokha Town Council, the NDPP has done well by winning 7 of the total 15 wards. Coming second, the NCP sprung a surprise by winning 5 seats, while the BJP won 3 seats. It may be noted here that the Congress failed to register a single win in Wokha Town council polls.

In Phek district Town Council polls, the NPF has done well by winning 7 of the total 11 wards. NDPP won 3 and one ward went to an independent candidate.

The NDPP has asserted its dominance by sweeping the ULB polls for the Meluri Town Council which comes under Phek district. The NDPP won all the nine wards, 4 uncontested.

In Medziphema Town Council that comes under Chumoukedima District, the NDPP won 6 of the total 9 wards, while three wards were won by independent candidates.

This is the first time that the municipal elections were held with 33% reservation for women.

The civic body polls, which was conducted last in 2004 without reservations, remained stalled due to opposition by organisations representing Naga tribes against the 33 per cent reservations for women.

A total of 523 candidates including 325 males and 198 females from 11 political parties contested for 213 wards. Earlier, 64 candidates were declared elected unopposed.

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio also congratulated the winning candidates in a post on X and wrote, “Congratulations to the winning candidates in the ULB elections. I extend my best wishes as you take on the responsibilities to address civic issues. I’m confident your dedication will lead to positive changes, and fulfillment of the public’s expectations in your respective wards.”
