Nagaland Cabinet Puts Regularisation of 147 Asst Professors on Hold

Five-member committee of bureaucrats set up to discuss matter with stakeholders

Bowing to pressure from several organisations including Naga Students Federation (NSF), and the All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU), Nagaland Cabinet today decided to “keep in abeyance” its earlier decision to regularise 147 assistant professors who were hired on contractual basis.

The Nagaland Cabinet in its emergency meeting held today evening to discuss just this one issue, decided to set up a 5-member committee of bureaucrats to be led by Agriculture Production Commissioner & Secretary Wezope Kenye. The committee will talk to all stakeholders and submit its report after two months.

Briefing about the Cabinet meeting and its decision, Higher Education Minister Temjen Imna Along said, “After seeing all the agitations and remorse of the various NGOs and stakeholders, the Cabinet deliberated on the absorption issue at length and had decided to keep the absorption, regularisation in abeyance. Proper deliberations will be done with all the stakeholders. A five-member committee has been set up, consisting of senior bureaucrats, they will deliberate with the stakeholder NGOs, and then move forward.

Appealing to the NGOs, the Minister said, “I would like to appeal to all the NGOs, especially the NSF, the NNQF, and also the CTAN, and all the affiliate bodies, as they had appealed for, the absorption has been kept in abeyance,… we should come forward and wait for the committee members and all the stakeholders to take part. Without speaking with them, without deliberating with all stakeholders, I don’t think the outcome would be peaceful, so the department would like to appeal to all the stakeholders to now give rest to their agitation, and as the committee has taken two months of time to look at all the decisions that have been done, I think we should be steady and committed to the need of all the stakeholders.”

“At the same time, I would also like to let all our aspirants know, that the government is not against them. The government is not against their aspirations, and we are making sure that more posts will be created in the days to come.”

Earlier, the NSF and ANCSU had given a seven-day ultimatum to the state government to roll back its regularisation decision.
