First Published: 28th June, 2023 11:47 IST

As per sources, neither the ENPO nor the tribal bodies invited to the meeting are aware of the reason for the postponement

The Nagaland Government has postponed the consultative meeting that was to be held on June 30 to discuss the proposal for the constitution of an Autonomous Council or Territory for the six Eastern Districts of the state.

The crucial consultative meeting was to discuss the Center’s proposal for maximum autonomy in the six districts of Tuensang, Mon, Longleng, Kiphere, Shamator, and Noklak of Nagaland.

A notification issued by the state Home Department test said, “The consultative meeting in regard to the proposed proposal for constitution of an autonomous council for the 6 eastern districts of the state namely, Tuensang, Mon, Longleng, Kiphire, Shamatir and Noklak scheduled on 30th June at 1.30 pm at the state Banquet Hall, Kohima hereby stands postponed due to unavoidable circumstances till further notice.”

As per sources, neither the ENPO nor the tribal bodies invited to the meeting are aware of the reason for the postponement.

The consultative meeting was to be attended by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, Deputy Chief Ministers Y Patton and TR Zeliang, MLAs from the Eastern districts, advisers, besides the two MPs from the state and the Speaker of the Nagaland Assembly.

Earlier in the day yesterday and prior to the postponement of the meeting, the Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organization (ENPO), the apex body of seven tribes in Eastern Nagaland, had appealed for support from the Nagaland Government and the Nagas in fulfilling the demands of the people of Eastern Nagaland.

According to the ENPO, it has accepted the proposal from the Government of India to establish a Frontier Naga Territory in the Eastern Districts with legislative, executive, administrative, and financial autonomy considering the sentiments of the Nagas towards unity and togetherness.

The performance of the proposed set-up will be evaluated after ten years to determine whether it has been successful in achieving the goals of the Eastern Nagaland Region’s residents.

The ENPO further stated that following the meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in December 2022, a series of discussions with the staff of the Ministry of Home Affairs involving the State Government were held, which ultimately led to the Government of India’s promise of the creation of the Frontier Naga Territory.
