The two individuals were arrested on June 10, 2024, and a large quantity of AK-47 rifles were seized from them

Two prisoners, who were Myanmar nationals, escaped from the Serchip district jail on Saturday evening, raising several eyebrows and posing serious questions about the security arrangements in the prison.

The two individuals were identified as 44-year-old Lalchhanhima and 31-year-old Lalnunnema, and they were arrested on June 10, 2024. A large number of AK-47 rifles were also seized from the duo.

Jail authorities informed that the duo was playing volleyball in the afternoon. After they were done, they went to the storeroom to return their sports items. But after giving back the items, they did not turn up to their cells and sneaked out through the main entrance of the jail.

Meanwhile, the district jail superintendent has lodged an FIR and police are looking for the duo.

Well, this is not the first jailbreak incident reported from Mizoram. In April last year, 5 Myanmarese nationals escaped from the Lunglei district jail of Sazaikawn.

The 5 Myanmerese nationals were apprehended under various crimes.
