Mizoram today reported its first Covid death since October last year.
The deceased was a 63-year-old woman, a resident of Aizawl.
She died on Monday, May 1, informed integrated Disease Surveillance Program officials.
The officials said that the deceased was having comorbidities including critical and fatal illness.
34 fresh cases of Covid-19 have been reported in the last 24 hours making the total active case at 78 as of Tuesday, the officials said.
According to the officials, 342 samples were tested in April, and 82 people were found to be infected with the virus.
34 of those affected individuals have been recovered and discharged from the hospital.
The majority of those infected were having symptoms, without any travel history and were infected locally, said officials.
The infection’s more recent and contagious XBB.1.16.1 and XBB.1.16 strains are more likely to infect both young and old people. These variants can easily infect lower respiratory tract, they said.
Health Minister Dr. R. Lalthangliana today chaired a meeting on the Covid-19 crisis in Aizawl where preparations for a potential spike in Coronavirus infections were discussed.
It was reported in the meeting that National Health Mission (NHM) has made preparations for the purchase on RT-PCR test kits and expensive drugs for the treatment of highly critical Covid-19 patients.
It may be mentioned here that after being free from Covid-19 cases for almost 3-4 months, in the last few weeks, the number of active cases of the infection has significantly increased in the Northeastern states, particularly in Mizoram, Meghalaya, and Nagaland.
Mizoram currently has the highest number of Covid-19 active cases among the 8 northeastern states.
