Good News For Cab Drivers! Govt to Launch Cooperative Taxi Service, Drivers to Keep 100% of Earnings

First Published: 27th March, 2025 11:13 IST

Over the past three and a half years, the Ministry of Cooperation has worked to create opportunities that directly benefit drivers.

The central government will soon launch a cooperative taxi service that will allow taxi drivers to keep the entire earnings.

This initiative stands in contrast to private ride-hailing services like Ola, Uber, and Rapido, which charge drivers commissions ranging from 30% to 40% on each ride. The cooperative taxi service aims to eliminate these middlemen, ensuring that drivers retain their full earnings.

This will also allow the registration of two-wheelers, taxis, rickshaws, and four-wheelers, where drivers will receive the entire profit directly.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the initiative in Parliament on Wednesday, highlighting its potential to empower drivers and reduce dependency on private aggregators.

Shah emphasized that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Sahkar se Samriddhi’ (Prosperity through Cooperation) vision is not merely a slogan but a transformative reality.

Over the past three and a half years, the Ministry of Cooperation has worked to create opportunities that directly benefit drivers.

Alongside the taxi service, the government is set to launch a cooperative insurance company. Amit Shah expressed confidence that this initiative will soon become the largest private-sector insurance provider, further strengthening the cooperative sector and offering affordable insurance solutions.

The Home Minister also reflected on the Modi government’s decade-long tenure, calling it a period that will be recorded in golden letters for its impact on poverty alleviation. Listing key achievements, he highlighted:

Construction of houses for the poor
Installation of toilets
Provision of clean drinking water
Free ration of 5 kg food grains per person
Gas connections for low-income families
Free medical treatment up to Rs 5 lakh
Electricity access for all

Shah stated that over the past 10 years, 25 crore people have been lifted above the poverty line. “Previously, the poor had to spend their entire lives struggling for basic necessities. Under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, they have been provided for. Now, the challenge is to help them grow, start businesses, and contribute to national development,” he said.

Shah reiterated that cooperation is the most effective way to empower individuals without capital.

Through cooperative initiatives, millions are pooling small resources to start businesses, generate self-employment, and live with dignity. The government’s cooperative model aims to foster entrepreneurship and economic inclusivity, transforming the lives of countless citizens.
