Manipur unrest: Supreme Court to hear pleas of Centre and victims of May 4 sexual assault today

Victims who were seen in the viral video have filed pleas before the SC seeking protection of their identity
The Supreme Court will today hear the Centre’s plea to transfer the trial of the case in connection with the Manipur viral video case to any other state.
The plea was supposed to be heared on July 28, but the hearing was deferred owing to CJI DY Chandrachud’s bad health.
On July 27, the Centre had filed an affidavit pertaining to the transfer of the case. The Centre also had sought a direction to complete the trial within 6 months of filing the chargesheet.
Multiple reports also stated that the victims seen in the viral video have filed a fresh petition in the Supreme Court praying for protection of their identity. The survivors of the horrific incident have filed separate applications in this regard. Reports stated that the pleas would be heared today.
The apex court on July 20 had said it was “deeply disturbed” after the video surfaced showing the two women being subjected to brutality.
A bench of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices PS Narasimha and Manoj Misra said it was “simply unacceptable” and using women as an instrument in violence is unacceptable. The Supreme Court had also sought response from the Centre as well as the Manipur government on whether action has been against the perpetrators.
After this the Centre on July 27 informed the Supreme Court that it has decided to entrust the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) with the investigation in the matter.
The step has been taken with the consent of the State Government of Manipur considering the gravity of the offence, the Centre had said.
A case was registered at the Nongpok Sekmai Police station of the B Phainom village after the video showing the 2 women paraded naked and sexually assaulted went viral.
